Portugal to Gran Canaria 1000nm Mile Builder
This offshore cruise is one of the longest "mile builders" we do and a firm favorite for sailors wanting to put some serious miles under their belt. The route is likely to log 1,000 tidal miles in one trip with a couple of short stop overs on the Algarve, Southern Spain and/or Morocco.
Approximately 8-9 days
- Minimum age 18
- Minimum Experience RYA Competent Crew or 5 days, 4 night hours, 100 miles
You will need to make your own way to Cascais in Portugal to meet the yacht (Lisbon aiport is nearby). Following a thorough safety brief and a chance to get to know the yacht, you will head South down the Portuguese coast taking advantage of any trade winds that have set in. At Cabo St. Vincent (the most SW point of mainland Europe) you will turn East and follow the sandy and sunny Algarve coast towards Spain. There is likely to be a brief stop over (and possiby a meal ashore) somewhere along the Spanish coast before the yacht turns South once more, running parallel to the coast of Morocco. As you finally turn West you will pass Lanzarote and Fuerteventura before making landfall at Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.
On passage you will learn about watch patterns, offshore position fixing, steering in ocean waves and long distance passage planning. You will experience the Atlantic Ocean and enjoy plenty of sailing. The skipper will schedule actual stop overs on the basis of the prevailing weather and forecast.
The total route length is approximatly 1,000NM.
