Aims:

Often referred to as the RYA Dayskipper Theory Course, the Dayskipper Shorebased course aims to provide you with sufficient knowledge to navigate around familiar tidal and non-tidal waters by day. 

The course is aimed at those who intend to progress onto a Day Skipper Sail Practical , Dayskipper Power Practical or Advanced Powerboat course and is totally classroom based.

Course Duration:

We run this course in various formats, so you can choose the option that best suits you from the following:

  • Five consecutive days from 0930 to 1700 hrs
  • Two separate weekend sessions; the first weekend incorporating Saturday to Monday, the second weekend covering Saturday to Sunday, from 0930 to 1700 hrs
  • Night School, once a week for fourteen evenings (1800 to 2100 hrs) during the winter months 
  • As part of the nine day (consecutive) Dayskipper Combined Shorebased and Practical Course (0930 Saturday to 1600 the following Sunday)

Pre Requisites:

There are no specified requirements, although a couple of days experience crewing aboard a sailing or motor yacht is preferable.

Course Content:

The Dayskipper Shorebased course is essentially a navigation course for beginners. The course includes:

  • Basic seamanship
  • An introduction to navigation and meteorology.
  • A basic knowledge of lights
  • Weather
  • IRPCS

Students will have the opportunity to use the real kit; our classroom is kitted out with live Garmin GPS chart plotters and we integrate traditional (paper chart) navigation with the more modern electronic navigation throughout the course.

 If you are new to yachting or motor boating and would like to become a skipper then this is the course for you.

What's Not Included:

  • Night school students will need to buy a plotter and dividers. (Students on the 5-day and split weekend course can borrow ours).
