RYA Yachtmaster Shorebased

Aims:

To learn the principles of navigation and passage planning for coastal and offshore passages. It is aimed at those who will go on to attend a Coastal Skipper Power, Yachtmaster Power, Coastal Skipper Sail or Yachtmaster Sail Prep Week course and is totally classroom based.

Course Duration:

We run this course in two different formats, so you can choose the one that suits you.

• Our most popular option is the five day course, days are 0930 to 1700. We run this courses regularly and available start dates are at the bottom of the page.
• Alternatively you can take the course over fourteen evenings Night School, again the next course date is at the bottom of the page

Pre Requisites:

This is an advanced course in navigation, students would usually have previously attended a Dayskipper Shorebased Course (or have equivalent knowledge). The instructor will assume you have a reasonable theoretical knowledge of navigation and some experience of putting it into practice. If you have not already then we recommend you also take the Short Range Certificate.

Course Content:

Prior to the course we send out some Collision Regulations to be learnt in advance. On arrival you will receive the RYA Yachtmaster pack and handbook. Three assessment papers and certification are included. We also give all students a Chart plotter CD Rom simulator to take home and run a number of sessions using our live Garmin GPS Chart plotters.

The three assessment papers cover collision regulations, chart-work and meteorology. In addition to these subjects the course also covers safety equipment, stability, electronic navigation, sailing abroad and skippers responsibilities. At the end of the course your instructor will give you a full debrief.
