Try Boating / Get Started

If you want to get away from it all, relax on the water and try boating then our range of courses have made it very easy and inexpensive for you to have a go. Most courses are written and recognised by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) who are the governing body for sailing and power boating in the UK. The first decision is whether you want to harness the wind and sail or you would prefer an engine-powered sport.

Beginner Sailing Courses

Having decided you would like to sail, the best place to begin is with a two-day Start Course. There are various different types of craft to choose between. Each one is described below.

Sail Cruising

The RYA Start Yachting Course This is the place to start if you want to try yachting. It's a two-day course and you eat and sleep on board the yacht for the weekend. There will be up to five of you in board with our instructor and you are likely to visit the Isle of Wight during the weekend. The yachts have living facilities on board and an auxiliary engine.

Keelboating

The RYA Keelboat Level 1 and Level 2 Courses The Keelboats are smaller than the yachts; they are open boats (i.e. no cabins) and generally sailed by less people. This means you will be more involved. The Keelboats day sail from our marina on both days of the course. The Level 1 course is two days and will give you a basic knowledge and experience. Bolted together with the Level 2 Course (a further two days) you will really be ready to sail without an Instructor on board.

Dinghy & Multi-hull Sailing

The RYA Dinghy & Multihull Level 1 and Level 2 Courses The dinghies and cats (catamarans) are smaller again and generally sailed by 1-3 people. Dinghy and cat Sailing are both watersports and we issue wetsuits. It is likely that you will at some point get wet. These craft can be exciting and you will be very close to the sea. Dingy Sailing is popular with families. Most people start with the combined Level 1 and 2 courses, each is two days. The Level 1 will get you started sailing with an Instructor, how to rig it, how to steer and so on, where as the Level 1 and 2 will prepare you to go sailing without an Instructor on board by the end of the course.

Beginner Powerboat Courses

Having decided you would like to drive a powered craft, the best place to begin is with one of our beginner courses. There are various different types of craft to choose between. Each one is described below.

Powerboating

The RYA Level 2 Powerboat Course is the place to start. It covers slow speed and high speed boat handling, safety and some basic navigation. It's a two-day course and runs 0930 to 1700 each day. Powerboat courses take place on open boats less than 10m in length, often on board RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boats).

Motor Cruising

If you fancy something bigger and more luxurious then the RYA Helmsman's Course takes place on a cabin cruiser over 10m long. These two days have a similar content to the Powerboat Level 2 but on board bigger diesel powered craft. This course would ideally be followed up with the RYA Dayskipper Shorebased and Dayskipper Power Courses.

Personal Water Craft (PWC / Jet Skis)

Jet Skis provide one of the easiest and least expensive ways to get into powered water sports. The RYA PWC Proficiency Course only takes a day and will teach you how to launch and handle one of these exciting machines. The course also covers safety and collision avoidance.
