New Hope wins the SB20 Frostbite Championships

Our team aboard SB20 "New Hope" sailed to victory over the weekend winning both races at the RSYC Frostbite Championships and being awarded the "Boat Club" Trophy

A new event for 2017. This weekend’s SB20 Frostbite Championships were hosted by Royal Southampton Yacht Club with the trophy provided by Boat Club. This was the first SB20 Class UK event of the season and the first opportunity for crews to score points towards the SB20 2017 Solent series.

Today's racing consisted of two races with both results counting to a boat’s overall result. Race 1 got of to a good start with a mix of windward and leeward legs weaving up and down Southampton Water. The fleet got of to a clean start and were equally split on tactics, some pushed out a long leg to the left of the course wishing to cross the tide early while others tacked right into the tide intending to stay in the stronger breeze away from the shore. Both tactics seemed to pay off as the order at the first mark alternated between left and right boats, First round was ARADA Stoves - New Hope. The deciding leg of the course was a long reach, where those who could hold the boat flat enough at a high angle benefited from planning to the mark. The winning boat was local Royal Southampton Yacht Club team ARADA Stoves - New Hope, followed by 2 of the Hamble boats “Striptease” (2nd) sailed by her new J/70 team and “Dark & Stormy” (3rd).

The second race promised similar conditions and the Race Officer sent all 4 fleets round the same course, the SB20 start was delayed due to shipping, general recalls and fleet 1 finishing so got of late, at approximately the time of high water. With the tide now a very negligible factor those boat that adapted their earlier strategy benefited greatly. ARADA Stoves - New Hope again got of to a good start and led the fleet around the course and scored another bullet, her closest threats were, “Attack Of the Clones,” (2nd) sailed by Jack Payne and “Dark & Stormy” (3rd) , sailed by Andrew Bell.

Prize giving was held at Royal Southampton Yacht Club, where ARADA Stoves - New Hope won a bottle of wine for each race, a bag provided by event sponsor NJO sails and the new “SB20 Frostbite Trophy” donated by Boat Club. Becky, the Director of Boat Club commented, “We were keen to support the class with this new event so provided the trophy. We never intended it would be won by our staff but will be delighted to display it in our foyer for the next 12 months.”

Overall results
1st ARADA Stoves - New Hope - 2 points - (Fox, Innes, Glover
2nd Attack of the Clones – 6 points - (Payne, Joel, Elsey)
3rd Dark & Stormy – 6 points - (Bell)

This new event intentionally coincided with the Class coaching day on Saturday, so crews would benefit from a day of coaching with Olympic coach and SB20 veteran Mark Rushall followed by the Frostbite Championships on Sunday.
