Having come out of re-fit a few days ago and with new race sails delivered last Thursday Storm Trooper was ready for the RORC Cervantes Trophy race from Cowes to Le Harve. She crossed the start line for RORC's first European offshore race of 2011 on Saturday morning and finished Sunday morning.
On board with Adam our Chief Yachting Instructor was Tom, one of our Interns and six students. Meanwhile Cheeki Rafiki our First 40.7 raced the same event in fleet IRC2. Steve the skipper was joined by Ifan (another Intern) and 7 other students. Some of the crews had never raced before, some had never sailed offshore before, none of them had ever raced together or on these yachts before.
130 miles and 22 hours Storm Trooper finished a very respectable 11th in IRC4 from a fleet of 38 yachts (so well into the top third). Rafiki came about half way in class and 23rd overall (from a total of 106 yachts).
This was always intended as a training weekend/race so the teams on board are delighted with the results. Both teams are looking forward to improving their position throughout the season as they learn how to race these yachts and start to bond as a team.
