Training in Motor Cruisers, RIBs, Sportsboats
Our powerboat training courses fall into three categories: power, motor and PWC (Personal Water Craft). Our 'Power' and 'Motor' courses are categorised according to the size of the craft; those boats smaller than 10m are considered 'Powerboats', whilst those larger than 10m (but remaining under 24m) are known as 'Motor Boats'. The type and level of training you require will depend upon the size of the vessel you intend to drive.
Drivers of smaller boats, sports boats and RIBs will benefit from the RYA's Powerboat Level 2 course, along with the ICC (International Certificate of Competence) for driving in other European countries. Powerboat drivers can progress through the training schemes, taking onboard the RYA's Powerboat Intermediate and Powerboat Advanced courses.
Motor Boaters, meanwhile, may wish to start at either of the two beginner courses; RYA Start Motor Cruising (crew course) & RYA Helmsman's (helming course) or, depending upon experience, aim for the RYA Day Skipper Power qualification. This Day Skipper certificate can be endorsed with the ICC (known as the International Licence) for powered craft up to 24m in length.
Owners of PWC (Jet-skis) who regularly launch in UK harbours may find themselves being asked to show their PWC Proficiency certificate. Often, this is also required for driving jet-skis abroad. We teach the essential PWC Proficiency course as well as going on to teach to PWC Instructor level, useful for those looking to work in the watersports or super yacht industries.
Most of our powerboat training is recognised by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) and/or the MCA (Maritime Coastguard Agency). We also teach a few specialist courses, which are recognised by the BSAC (British Sub Aqua Club) or BWS (British Water Ski) bodies. These courses are aimed specifically at ski boat drivers or dive boat drivers.
As well as offering a variety of courses and licences for leisure power boaters, we also cater for those who are lucky enough to drive boats for a living. RYA and MCA Skipper and Crew qualifications are recognised across the planet and are necessary for many careers within the boating industry.
