MCA Yachtmaster Conversion (Sail to Motor)

INTRODUCTION: If you already hold either the Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence or Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence for sail then you can convert to motor. Again you are advised to take some training and then an external examiner will jump on board to check you out. The good news is you have already done the hard work when you did the sailing exam and the conversion exam is only three hours per person.

AIM: Simple really. To work with you to ensure you pass your exam. The preparation time not only gets you familiar with the boat, the Solent and the crew but it looks at exam techniques and polishes rusty skills.

DURATION: Six days (5 days preperation and one day exam).

PRE REQUISITES: The pre requisites remain the same as to when you took your sail exam, however for conversion candidates only half of the mileage needs to be in a motor cruiser, you can borrow half from your original sail log book.

COURSE CONTENT: As you have already proved your pilotage, skippering, safety and "collision regs." these do not feature in the preparation this time. It is assumed that you know all of this as an existing Yachtmaster. (Be warned however it would be embarrassing if an examiner quizzed you on night lights and you had forgotten them). During your conversion training we will concentrate principally on 5 areas;

·    Boat Handling in a motor cruiser

·    Passage Planning for a high speed craft

·    More use of electronics in particular GPS and radar

·    MOB procedure

·    More diesel knowledge, get you home techniques

If these subjects sound daunting then you should consider the one day radar and diesel courses and the full five day preparation and exam. As with all exam preps, this is not the time to learn techniques from scratch but revise before an exam.
