RYA Competent Crew or Dayskipper Sail Over Weekends
INTRODUCTION:
The RYA Competent Crew and Dayskipper Sail Courses are run alongside each other. Although they are different courses we have found Competent Crew and Dayskipper students gain from sharing the same yacht. The key benefit is that while Competent Crew (beginner) students are learning how to helm and trim sails the Dayskipper (Intermediate) students are not competing for the chart table and skippering role. Typically there will be a mix of up to five Competent Crew and Dayskipper students on board. Below you will find a course description for each of these courses.
RYA COMPETENT CREW
AIM: To become active crew members rather than just passengers. This course is for beginners.
DURATION: We run this course in two different formats, so you can choose the one that suits you
· Five days spread over two weekends- At the bottom of this page you can book the twin weekend option.
· If you would prefer to take the course over five consecutive days (starting on a Saturday, Monday or Wednesday) please return to the Sail Cruising Menu on the left
PRE REQUISITES: None.
COURSE CONTENT: Basic seamanship and helming. By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row the dinghy and assist in all the day to day routines. This is a five day live aboard course. All meals are on board (except one evening meal ashore, not included). This is a good fun social introduction to yacht sailing.
RYA DAYSKIPPER SAIL
AIM: To give students the skills required to skipper a cruising yacht in familiar tidal waters by day. All of our Dayskipper Courses are tidally endorsed.

If gybes are still taking you by surprise then you are not quite ready for this course. It is recommended that you attend the Day Skipper Shorebased Course and Competent Crew Course before taking this practical course. You will also find the RYA SRC Course useful.
COURSE CONTENT: Pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and navigation. This practical course gives you the chance to put all the skills learnt on the shorebased course into practice. Once you have passed the Dayskipper practical we are happy to also issue you with the ICC (International Certificate of Competence) for sail craft up to 24m (subject to RYA license fee). The ICC is available to UK citizens and residents.
